Diagram indicating the focal Fraunhofer zone. The lateral intensity profile in the focal Fraunhofer zone is the Fourier transform of the apodization of the aperture elements. The Fourier transform relationship is thus used to determine the necessary weighting of the transducer elements for a desired intensity pattern.
