Table II. Proposed Diagnostic Criteria for Bangungut/SUNDS.

Clinical features:
  1. Born in the Philippines or having a Philippine ancestry

  2. At least 2 years old

  3. History of being resuscitated from sudden cardiac death labeled as Bangungut by their treating physicians

  4. Event takes place during sleep or at rest

  5. Victim known to be healthy until immediately before the event.

May include at least one of the following:
  1. Male sex

  2. Ages 16-65

  3. Witnessed agonal respiration (moan, “bangun”) or diffculty in breathing (groan, “ungul”

  4. Positive history of family members dying during sleep or sudden unex-plained death at a young age.

Exclusion criteria:
 Exclude evidence of another identifable serious medical condition such as
 myocardial infarction, thyroid disease, infectious disease, severe thiamine
 defciency, diabetes, electrolyte imbalance and other diseases that may
 secondarily cause cardiac arrest.
