Transformants carrying the MSD3 5′ flanking DNA fused to the ARS2 reporter gene (n = 3) or a control construct (n = 3) were grown to mid to late log phase (2 × 106 to 2 × 107 cells/mL) in TAP media with various amounts of added Fe (as indicated), or with (25 µM) or without (0 µM) added Mn, and culture supernatants assayed for arylsulfatase activity using p-nitrophenyl sulfate. Activities are expressed as picomoles of p-nitrophenol liberated per 106 cells per minute and are given as mean ± se.
