Gram-negative bacteria that parasitize the reproductive tract can be recognized by TLR4 expressed on DSCs, and the ligation of bacterial LPS with TLR4 leads to activation of the ERK/MAPK and NF-κB pathways, which in turn results in up-regulation of MCP-1 in DSCs. Secreted MCP-1 inhibits perforin production in NK cells by promoting SOCS3 expression, which may contribute to the fetal-maternal tolerance.
