Potential changes of ACh and NE on the tuning curve of auditory cortex neurons. (A) Converging results (Ashe et al., 1989; McKenna et al., 1989; Metherate et al., 1990; review in Metherate, 2011) indicate that ACh decrease the acoustic threshold at the CF and at surrounding frequencies whereas it should increase the threshold for frequency far away from the CF. These differential effects should lead to a sharpening of the tuning curve. (B) Converging results (Manunta and Edeline, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000); suggest that NE increases the acoustic threshold at the CF and at surrounding frequencies. The increases in threshold is lower at the CF than at frequencies far away from CF, which also leads to a sharpening of the tuning curve.
