Cultures were adjusted to OD₆₀₀ = 0.01 and incubated with shaking at 28°C. Bacterial populations were quantified at 12-hour intervals by dilution plating. With the exception of wildtype Pma ES4326, genotype names indicate the gene that is disrupted by a mini-Tn5 transposon. Error bars reflect standard deviation of the mean of four replicate samples. Three independent experiments were performed with similar results.
