Effect of immunization against PSMs on lethal sepsis/infectious endocarditis. Rabbits (n = 4 or 5 per group) were either immunized against a cocktail of PSMα-1, PSMα-4, and PSMγ/δ-toxin (squares) or left unimmunized (circles). Aortic valves were then mechanically damaged, and rabbits were challenged with ∼10⁷ CFUs of wildtype FRI1169 in the marginal ear veins. Rabbits were monitored for up to four days and were prematurely euthanized if displayed signs predictive of lethal illness. P-value determined by log rank test.
