Using one-way travel times for the echoes shown in the figure, and the known speed of sound in the surrounding fluid (cf), the speed of sound in the sample is computed from c = {[t2t1)+(t4t3)]/(t2t1)}cf. The sample’s thickness (h) is then found from h = c(t2t1).
