Figure 3.
(A) Quantitative analysis of apoptosis as percentage of untreated control in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cell lines (SCC-1, SCC-5, FaDu, and Cal27). Cells were treated with ultrasound only (UST), cisplatin (1 µM) only, cisplatin plus UST, cetuximab (10 µM) only, or cetuximab plus UST. In all 4 cell lines treated with combination drug and microbubble-mediated ultrasound therapy (MB-UST), there was statistically more apoptosis (*P < .05). (B) Quantitative analysis of apoptosis using propidium iodide (PI) in SCC-5 cells. Cotreatment with MB-UST significantly increased cell death with both cetuximab (P < .05) and cisplatin (P < .05). (C) Dose-response curves for SCC-5 cells in the presence of cetuximab and UST and cisplatin and UST.
