Expression of MazF-cd in E. coli decreases steady-state levels of ompF and tufA mRNAs but not lpp in vivo. RNA was extracted at the time points indicated from BW25113 cells expressing MazF-cd, followed by Northern analysis. The cleavage of ompF and tufA was detected, and cleavage products are denoted by arrows. No additional products were detected below the cropped images. No cleavage products were detected for lpp. A minimal level of cleavage occurred at time zero due to the leaky expression of pBAD33-mazF-cd before induction.
