A minimal model of the RFC-catalyzed PCNA loading mechanism. All the kinetic data were fit to this model. Activated RFC is designated as *RFC. Three slow steps in the mechanism (k3, k4 and k8) are highlighted in orange. A separate step shows equilibrium between loading-active (PCNA) and loading-inactive (**PCNA) conformations.
