Convergent Extension Movements. The intercalation of cells from a lateral position to a medial position provides forces to elongate the column of cells contributing to the anterior-posterior axis, thus elongating the embryo. Thus, a short, broad layer of cells can be repositioned to generate a long, narrow layer of cells.
