Conversion of carotenoids to xanthophylls. Lycopene cyclases (LCYE and LCYB) convert lycopene to α-carotene and β-carotene. Formation of the xanthophylls zeaxanthin and lutein is mediated by two separate stereospecific β- and ε-ring hydroxylases (CYP97 and diiron HYD).
