1The cultivation media and the trace element solution were prepared in 20 and 5 L of demineralized water.

2During the feeding phase of each SBR cycle, the synthetic influent wastewater was composed of 10% (v/v) of carbon source medium, of 10% (v/v) of nitrogen and phosphorus source medium, and of 80% (v/v) of tap water.

3The reactors R1–R5 and R6 were operated with 400 and 500 mgCOD L−1 of acetate in the influent wastewater, respectively. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) conversion factor of acetate is 64 gCOD molAc−1.
