The training experiment. (a) Force-response parameters αx, αy as a function of time. The orders of magnitude are different because the flow is incoming in the x-direction, hence forces are much larger in this direction compared to the cross-flow y-direction. (b) Forces acting on the cell surface. Force in x-direction: fx; force in y-direction: fy; peak normal force: fp. Note the difference in magnitude of the forces in the x and y directions, due to the fact that the flow is incoming and outgoing along the x-direction. Force units are in dynes.
