Voltage clamp recordings made in the presence of Na+-containing physiological external solution (A) display quick inward (downward) Na+ currents. When the external solution is changed to Na+-free NMDG external solution (B), all apparent Na+ current is abolished. Current density-voltage relationship (C) shows the amelioration of Na+ current when the external solution is changed from Na+-containing to Na+-free solution.
