Voltage clamp recordings made in the presence of Na⁺-containing physiological external solution (A) display quick inward (downward) Na⁺ currents. When the external solution is changed to Na⁺-free NMDG external solution (B), all apparent Na⁺ current is abolished. Current density-voltage relationship (C) shows the amelioration of Na⁺ current when the external solution is changed from Na⁺-containing to Na⁺-free solution.
