CD68-positive macrophages are also positive for interleukin 17 (IL-17). Serial lymph node tissue sections from a representative uninfected individual (A, C, and E) and a patient with AIDS coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC; B, D, and F–H) were stained for CD3 (A and B), CD68 (C and D), and IL-17 (E–F) by immunohistochemical assay. Overlapping CD68 and IL-17 staining was detected using serial sections of tissue from patients with AIDS who were coinfected with HIV-1 and MAC (D and F) with minimal CD3+ cells (B). G and H, Additional tissues from coinfected patients that are positive for IL-17 staining, demonstrating that this is a typical presentation in patients with AIDS who are infected with MAC.
