Housing in Colombia is classified byestratos (strata) according to physical characteristics of homes and neighborhoods. Strata classifications range from one (the poorest) to six (the wealthiest) and were originally intended to determine costs of utilities. Strata are highly correlated with socioeconomic status (Departamento Nacional de Planeación).
