Irving Geis' Myoglobin Fold (1987). The α-helices form a watertight pocket for the haem (disc), in which oxygen is reversibly bound to the central iron atom. In 2000, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (Chevy Chase, Maryland) purchased the Geis Archives, which comprise a collection of the artist's work and related scientific correspondence and library.
