Effects of NO scavengers on the inhibition of mitochondrial respiration by NO. Mitochondria were suspended at 0.5 mg/ml, and state 3 respiration was initiated by the addition of ADP (0.6 mM), as indicated by the arrow. (A) NO (1 μM) was added as indicated by the arrow. Trace annotations: (i) NO alone, (ii) NO followed by PTIO (100 μM) as indicated by the arrow, (iii and iv) NO followed by oxyhemoglobin (7.5 μM) as indicated by the arrow, and (v) mitochondria alone, no additions other than ADP.
