Metabolic pathway activity based on available carbon source is illustrated. When glucose is present, cells ferment and follow the dashed line. The presence of glucose represses other metabolic pathways thus this condition is termed glucose repressed. When glucose is limited, cells become derepressed and low glucose respiratory enzymes are synthesized. This allows the cells to respire on ethanol, following the solid lines. The Snf1 protein complex is required to make the shift to utilize ethanol. In the absence of the Snf1 protein complex, cells are unable to respire effectively on ethanol.
