Splenomegaly in Africa: different causes and different treatments. This 9-year-old girl had a massive spleen. A traditional doctor had applied tattoos or scarifications that did not control the condition. A likely diagnosis is hyper-reactive malarial splenomegaly (Bedu-Addo & Bates, 2002), and it is hoped that the condition will respond to prolonged administration of antimalarial drugs (Sagoe, 1970).
