The continuous variables were presented as mean (95% confidence interval). The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the groups; the Chi-square test was used for the percentage of men. HFRS: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. n: number of patients; S-BUNmax: highest blood urea nitrogen; S-Creamax: highest serum creatinine concentration; B-Leukmax: highest blood leukocyte count; B-Thrommin: lowest blood thrombocyte count; S-ALBmin: lowest serum albumin concentration (all measured during hospital care).

aThere were no differences pertaining to age and male percent between total HFRS patients and controls or between the milder group and the more severe group.

bThe stages of HFRS include febrile, hypotensive, oliguric, diuretic, and convalescence.

cThe days from fever onset to convalescence discharge from the hospital.

**P < 0.01 between the milder group and the more severe group.

*P < 0.05 between the milder group and the more severe group.
