Management guidelines for patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

  • Consider screening for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and cardiovascular disease

  • Lifestyle interventions (weight loss; exercise)

  • Treatment of dyslipidemia:

    • — Statin therapy with close monitoring of liver function tests

    • — Consider combination therapy versus high triglycerides and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol

  • Treatment of T2DM: achieve good glycemic control

    • — Metformin (first-line therapy)

    • — Consider earlier use of pioglitazone

  • Treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

    • — In nondiabetics: consider vitamin E

    • — In T2DM: consider pioglitazone
