The odorant molecule with characteristic frequency ω0 binds to the olfactory receptor binding pocket forming an electron-donor-acceptor complex with donor energy ED and acceptor energy EA. Electron tunneling from the donor site to the acceptor site of the olfactory receptor is enhanced if the vibrational frequency of the odorant molecule matches the energy difference Δε = EDEA.
