Protein synthesis was measured as the incorporation of ¹⁴C-labeled Leu into protein. Seedlings were growing from d 5 in FNS containing 0.5 mm K⁺ and treated with butyrate (10 mm) and 21-d barley plants were growing from d 5 in FNS containing 2 μm K⁺ treated with procaine (0.2 mm).
