Experimental design of the DSS colitis model. The bacterial decontamination of the mouse intestine was performed by streptomycin treatment for the first two days of the experiment, followed by oral feeding with E. coli Nissle, E. coli Nissle::luxS or pure drinking water. Acute colitis was induced by administration of 4% DSS in addition to the bacteria to the drinking water, starting from day five of the experiment.
