Activity was tested using crude extracts of bacteria expressing specifier protein cDNAs, 1 mM allyl- or 2 mM benzylglucosinolate and 0.005 units myrosinase in 50 mM MES buffer, pH 6.0. The presence of non-isothiocyanate products (organic thiocyante, epithionitrile, simple nitrile) in dichloromethane extracts of the assay mixtures after 30 min incubation is indicated by +, the absence by - (in comparison to assays with extracts of bacteria harbouring the expression vector without cDNA insert, for chromatograms see Additional file 5: Figure S3).
