Adipose tissue sections of lean (A) and obese (B) women were immunostained for characterizing apoptotic nuclei with dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) and the adipocyte cell membrane marker perilipin. Perilipin positive cells are stained in red and apoptotic nuclei in green. White arrows indicate sites of ruptured plasma membrane with loss of perilipin staining. C: Quantification of TUNEL positive cells from 7 lean and 7 obese. D: higher magnification phase contrast of obese section (B) showing green apoptotic nuclei surrounding an adipocyte.
