Outline of the present methods. The FEL beam output is transported through the vacuum tube and controlled by the mirror to be directed onto the sample. The spot size of beam line is ca. 0.5 cm in diameter. The lysozyme sample was placed within the circle of beam spot on the slide glass and irradiated with the FEL. The sample was air-dried and subsequently analyzed by the various methods as described in the experimental section
