Lactonisation of 3, visualised by absorption spectra in H2O and basic EtOH (containing Et3N, 0.1% V/V). Due to lactonisation, virtually no absorption is observed in basic EtOH. On the other hand, 1 shows a shift but no attenuation of absorption in basic EtOH compared to H2O. The slight decrease in the absorption maximum is due to peak broadening, not lactonisation.
