Regulation of ATII cell apoptosis by p53-induced PAI-1 through PTEN-mediated inhibition of Akt phosphorylation during passive CS–induced lung injury. ATII cells isolated from WT, p53-deficient, and PAI-1–deficient mice exposed to ambient air or passive CS for 20 weeks. The cell lysates were tested for phosphorylated Akt (P-Akt), total Akt, phosphorylated P-PTEN, total PTEN, Bax, Bak, Bcl-XL, and β-actin by Western blotting. The bar graph represents the densitometric values of individual bands normalized against β-actin loading controls from three experiments and expressed as fold changes.
