The expression of genes in the opp1-norD operon is upregulated under low free iron conditions. Dipyridyl (DIP) and FeSO4 (Fe) were added to final concentrations of 400 μM and 50 μM, respectively, when the OD600 of the S. aureus MW2 culture reached ∼0.4. Cultures were incubated at 37°C for 30 min before the total bacterial RNA was extracted. (A) Expression of norD by strain MW2 under conditions of rich and low free iron.
