Schematic of the nature of convection currents set up in the mineral oil-water droplet system. The presence of the laser results in a temperature dependent change in the surface tension at the air-mineral oil interface. This effect draws the water droplets within a certain radius towards the laser beam. Proper steering of the location of the beam results in selective droplet-droplet adhesion.
