Sterculic oil supplementation improved glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity in obese ob/ob mice. (a) A glucose tolerance test (GTT) was performed in wild-type (WT) and ob/ob (OB) mice receiving an AIN-93G diet (AIN) or a sterculic oil-supplemented diet (SO) and (b) a corresponding blood glucose area under the curve (AUC) was calculated. (c) An interperitoneal insulin tolerance test (ITT) was performed in the same group of animals and blood glucose change over time was plotted and (d) blood glucose AUC calculations for the ITT. Treatment with SO improved glucose uptake and insulin sensitivity in ob/ob mice. Data are reported as mean ± SE; n = 4–7 per group. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and significance for the effects of diet (d), genotype (g), or their interaction (d × g) set at P < 0.05. When a significant interaction effect was found a Bonferroni multiple comparisons test was used to determine differences within groups. ¥ P < 0.05 OB AIN versus OB SO.
