Mechanics of lens placode formation. The optic vesicle contacts the surface ectoderm before lens placode formation. Adhesion between the optic vesicle and the pre-lens ectoderm is mediated by extracellular matrix components. The area of contact between the extracellular matrix and the surface ectoderm restricts expansion of the pre-lens domain. Continued cell division in this area leads to cell crowding and cell elongation resulting in placode formation.
