(A) Phylogenetic analysis of C23Lsequences show the grouping of the Brazilian VACV strains into two different branches (Groups 1 and 2), which do not cluster directly with the vaccine strains (vaccine strains: those with no asterisk; and VACV-WR, a laboratorial strain). The DMTV-2005 isolate was clustered with Group 1 as observed with A56R and B5R analyses. (B) Amino acid sequence alignments of the C23L. The stop-codon at position 173 is generated by a ten-nucleotide deletion and highlighted with an arrow. This genetic marker is shared by the DMTV-2005 isolate and other Brazilian VACV strains, such as MARV and GP2V (Group 1), whereas the ten-nucleotide deletion is absenting the GP1V, VBH and P1V strains (Group 2).
