Percentage rapid eye movement (REM) sleep per hour and non-REM (NREM) sleep per hour across 24 hr (constant darkness) in controls (A, B) and vSPZ lesioned rats (C, D). There was loss of circadian variation in both REM and NREM sleep after lesions in the vSPZ, whereas both REM and NREM sleep showed a robust circadian rhythm in the control group.
