The pre-synaptic filament has to find a specific sequence of bases (shown here in blue and pink and labelled ‘homology’) on a long molecule of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). It initially binds to the dsDNA through 3D diffusion (A), and then slides back and forth along the dsDNA as it search for the sequence (B). If it cannot find the sequence, the pre-synaptic filament can move to a new location through intersegmental transfer (C), and start sliding back and forth along the dsDNA molecule again (D), until it finds the sequence of bases it is looking for (E).
