(A) The ten object shapes used in the experiment. Objects were fragmented as shown. (B) Objects were randomly positioned within a 27×20 grid. Each object fragment was removed with p = .25. Finally all empty cells were filled with randomly selected fragments from the same object. Sixty images were generated in this way for each object. (C) Experimental design. Participants searched cued objects blocked in 20 trials per object. The cued object was first presented for 3s, followed by a central fixation dot. Participants fixated the dot and pressed a button to initiate the search image. Participants were told to press a button as soon as they found the object in each image, and then to continue to look at the object until the image disappeared, which occurred after 3 s. Object presentation order was counterbalanced across participants.
