Engineering the transalkylation reactions in the HhaI methyltransferase. Models of cofactor 2 bound in the active site of the WT (a) and an engineered variant (b) of M.HhaI (Q82A/Y254S/N304A) with DNA. Modeling was based on M.HhaI-DNA-AdoMet X-ray structure (PDB code 6mht). Red arrows point along the trajectory from attacking the C5 atom of the target cytosine residue to the transferable carbon in the cofactor.
