BBS mutant mouse SFO ultrastructure. TEM micrographs of coronal sections of 3.5 wk-old wild-type (A), Bbs1M390R/M390R (B) and Bbs6−/− SFO show an intact ependymal layer with zona adherens junctions between cells and numerous motile cilia on the apical surface. Transition zones (arrows in C) appear normal in 8 mo.-old Bbs6−/− mice. Electron-dense and vesicle-like material is seen in Bbs1M390R/M390R and Bbs6−/− SFO cilia in the presence (G) and absence (D-F) of axonemal disruption. Arrows point to axonemes.
