This biochemical study of synergism shows how synergism becomes effective after addition of CBH I, which boosts the hydrolysis rate on the polymorphic substrate. The AFM image insets depict changes of the substrate along the reaction timeline. Rapid synergistic degradation and consequential three-dimensional disruption of the substrate does not happen until all three cellulases (EG, CBH II, and CBH I) are present.
