PAI-1 protein concentrations increase in mice with DT-mediated alveolar injury. Diphtheria toxin was administered daily (12.5 μg/kg in 100 μl PBS by the i.p. route) for 14 days to either DTR− or DTR+ mice. An additional control group of DTR− mice were injected with 100 μl PBS for 14 days. BAL fluid was collected from each animal after the last DT injection on day 14 (A) and 1 week after the last DT injection on day 21 (B) and assayed by ELISA for PAI-1 protein concentration. Results are reported as mean ± SEM (n = 6). Groups are compared with a one-way ANOVA and a Newman–Kuels post hoc multiple comparison test.
