CD8 cells in active lesions co-localize with HLA-E. More CD8+ cells were found in active lesions (a; P = 0.0228; Mann–Whitney U-test). Also, more HLA-E protein expression was detected in lesion tissue enriched with CD8+ cells. There was mild but positive correlation (r2 = 0.2; P = 0.03) between the presence of CD8+ cells and HLA-E expression, suggesting that increased levels of HLA-E correlates with increased infiltration of CD8+ cells (b).
