Two of the four potential modes of multivalent ligand binding. A. The cluster effect results in recruitment of receptors on the cell surface to allow for multiple receptor–ligand interactions. B. The statistical effect allows ligands to bind to single binding sites on a receptor based on increased local effective concentration of the ligand.
