Emergence of multimodal body-size distributions. Steady-state distributions of the model (Eqs. 1 and 2) are demonstrated when the selection strength (s) is varied. When competition is deterministic, the distribution is smooth (A). However, when competition is sufficiently stochastic, multimodal patterns emerge (BD): peaks appear near the singularity at Inline graphic, followed by smooth tails on the right. The distance between consecutive peaks is of the order of Inline graphic, and the width of the peaks is affected by the mutation rate (Inline graphic) (see also Fig. S1).
