Fig. 4.

Transgenic HIF2A but not HIF1A mice exhibit glomerular disease. A: mice that carry 2 HIF2A transgenes that are expressed in podocytes develop a similar glomerular lesion to podocyte-selective Vhl KO mice. Images (×100) are shown. Glomeruli from transgenic mice carrying a single HIF2A transgene do develop glomerular lesions by 5 mo of age but this is less severe than pod Vhl KO at 7 wk of age. At 2 mo of age, no abnormalities are observed. Images (×100) are shown. B: graph shows urinary protein:creatinine ratios collected from podHIF2A+/+ homozygous transgenic mice compared with wild-type control littermates. C: glomeruli from transgenic mice that are homozygous for HIF1A transgene expressed in podocytes do not exhibit significant changes compared with wild-type control by 8 mo of age. D: table summarizing genotype/phenotype correlations in HIF2A and HIF1A transgenic mice. *P < 0.05. ***P < 0.001.
