Short-term depression can cause a nonmonotonic dependence of correlation on firing rate. Postsynaptic spike count correlation, ρout(t), calculated over a window size of t = 1 s plotted as a function of the postsynaptic firing rates, νout, as the presynaptic rates are varied from νin = 0.05 Hz to νin = 50 Hz. Synaptic weights for the static synapse model were adjusted at each sampled point so that the postsynaptic firing rate of the two models agrees to within a 5% error (see methods). Error bars are omitted because all standard errors are smaller than radius of the dots.
