Strain in the second set of simple beam models, plotted against morphological variables (from top) length, symphyseal length, angle, and width, for biting (left), shaking (middle) and twisting (right) loads. Note the strong correlation between bite and overall length, shake and symphyseal length, and twist and angle. Data is plotted as natural logarithms of linear measurements (mm) and angles (degrees). Dimensions of the beam models are based upon the volume rescaled versions of the high resolution FEMs for the corresponding species.
